Find support for your back
Choose support for your routine
- Match the product A wearable belt and a lumbar cushion serve different purposes.
- Comfort comes first Choose a fit that feels supportive without digging in.
- Keep moving Comfort products do not replace regular movement or exercise.
Make sitting more comfortable
- Check the seat A lumbar cushion should fit the space behind your lower back.
- Avoid pressure A belt should not dig into your ribs or hips when seated.
- Change position Take movement breaks rather than staying in one position.
Support during a busy day
- Choose your fit Check comfort while standing, walking and sitting.
- Work within your limits A belt does not make heavy lifting safe.
- Stay active Use suitable movement and lifting techniques for the task.
Understand what support can do
- Comfort is individual A supportive feel is not the same as treating the cause of pain.
- Know the limits NICE does not recommend belts or corsets to treat low back pain or sciatica.
- Get tailored care Persistent pain or pain travelling down the leg needs appropriate assessment.
A snug fit, without squeezing
- Measure first Use the exact measuring point in this product's size guide.
- Check in both positions You should breathe comfortably when sitting and standing.
- Watch your skin Remove the support if it causes rubbing, numbness or increasing pain.
Follow your recovery plan
- Use the prescribed support A general waist belt is not a replacement for a post-surgery brace.
- Follow your instructions Your clinician decides the type of brace and wearing schedule.
- Return gradually Do not use a belt to push through worsening pain.
Your questions, answered.
Should I choose a lumbar belt or a cushion?
A belt wraps around your body; a lumbar cushion supports the space behind your back when seated. Choose for your main use and check this model's description. They are not interchangeable.
How do I choose the correct size?
Use this product's size guide and measure where the diagram shows. Choose by that measurement, not your trouser size. For cushions, compare the dimensions with your chair or seat.
How tight should a belt feel?
Snug, without restricting comfortable breathing or digging into your ribs or hips. Test it sitting and standing. Remove it if you notice numbness, skin irritation or increasing pain.
How long can I wear it, and can I sleep in it?
Follow this model's instructions; there is no single wearing schedule for every support. Start with short periods and check comfort. Do not assume overnight wear is suitable. For a prescribed brace, follow your clinician's schedule.
Can I wear a belt under clothes or while sitting?
A thin cotton layer can reduce rubbing from a fabric belt. Keep clothing smooth and check that the support does not dig in when seated. Bulky or rigid designs may need more room under clothing.
Will it help back pain, sciatica or a slipped disc?
A support may feel comfortable, but it does not treat every cause of back pain. NICE does not recommend belts or corsets as treatment for low back pain or sciatica. A diagnosed condition needs an appropriate care plan.
Will wearing a belt weaken my muscles?
Effects depend on the support and how it is used; do not assume a belt will strengthen your back or replace exercise. Keep up appropriate activity, and follow clinical advice if you need prolonged or prescribed use.
Can I use it for lifting, work or exercise?
Check the activities specified for this model. A lumbar belt is not a guarantee against injury or a substitute for lifting technique. Do not lift more or push through pain because you are wearing one.
How do I clean the support?
Follow the product care label. For washable fabric belts, gentle hand washing and air drying are usually appropriate. Only remove stays if the instructions allow it. Cushion covers and foam inserts may need different care.
Why does it ride up or rub?
Check the size, position and strap tension, and smooth any clothing underneath. Readjust after sitting down. If it still digs in or slides, the shape or size may not suit you; avoid solving it by overtightening.
